At Born to Bake, every recipe tells a story — and it all begins with our founder, Rita Born.

Rita’s family is originally from Germany. Rita was born in Saran, Kazakhstan in the late 1960s, when the region was part of the USSR. Growing up, homemade food wasn’t just a treat — it was a way of life. From warm Russian breads to delicate Ukrainian pastries and hearty dishes from across the Soviet region, including all the different cultural and religious backgrounds and styles. Rita’s childhood table was filled with flavors that were always real, always fresh, and always made from scratch.

At 18, Rita returned to Germany, where she immersed herself in Europe’s vibrant culinary culture, adding German traditions and European techniques to her growing repertoire. What began as cooking and baking for family and friends quickly turned into a passion shared with the wider community, as orders for weddings, birthdays, and special occasions poured in.

In 2004, Rita moved to Canada, bringing with her a lifetime of food culture and experience. Over the years, as her family grew, Rita’s daughters-in-law — who share her deep passion for baking and cooking — joined her in the kitchen. Together, they create wonders for the table and unforgettable food experiences for every Born to Bake customer.

Today, Rita and her family combine flavors and techniques from around the world — with specialties in German and Russian cooking and baking — to craft goods that are both comforting and unforgettable.
